Why "hawker centre" is complicated for dogs
Ordinary pets are excluded from hawker centres, including their outdoor refreshment areas. SFA’s outdoor pet-dining change does not remove that exclusion. Some other food businesses may choose to welcome pets under the applicable conditions, but an open-air food hall is not automatically an exception. Check the exact operator and designated seating; otherwise arrange takeaway with a responsible companion remaining with your dog in a permitted place.
How to eat local with a dog
The workable approach is to seek out the outdoor, al-fresco parts of these hawker-style spaces, which since the 2025 pet-dining change can welcome leashed dogs by choice. Take the outer tables, bring your own water bowl, and keep your dog settled and out of the walkways where trays and hot bowls are moving. Where the sit-down option does not work, takeaway is your friend: order local, then eat at a nearby park or dog-friendly outdoor bench. That way you get the char kway teow and the dog gets the outing, without either bending a rule.
The rules in plain terms
Check the venue type and current permission before sitting down. Hawker-centre outdoor tables remain excluded for ordinary pets. A private restaurant’s permitted outdoor pet area is a different arrangement. Do not tie up or leave a dog unattended while queuing for food; arrange collection with another responsible person or choose an outlet that can accommodate the whole party.
